What glue manufacturers actually recommend for pressure

Clamping pressure requirements generally scale with wood density:

  • Softwoods (pine): roughly 100–150 psi
  • Medium-density woods (cherry, soft maple): roughly 150–200 psi
  • Hardwoods (oak, birch): roughly 200–300 psi

For most PVA wood glues, edge and face gluing typically needs 2–4 hours in clamps before the joint can be safely unclamped, with a full 24-hour cure recommended before putting the joint under real stress — even though it’s not still in the clamps that whole time.

Signs of too much vs too little pressure

Too much pressure can squeeze nearly all the glue out of the joint (glue-starving it), which leaves less adhesive actually bonding the two surfaces than a properly-clamped joint would have — a joint can fail from over-clamping, not just under-clamping. Too little pressure leaves visible gaps at the joint line and a bond that never fully makes contact across the glue surface. A thin, continuous bead of squeeze-out along the whole joint line is generally the sign you’re in the right range — heavy squeeze-out everywhere suggests too much pressure, and no squeeze-out at all suggests too little.

How clamp type affects achievable pressure

The clamp’s rated clamping force (see the spec numbers in our trigger clamp and parallel clamp comparisons) is the ceiling on pressure you can apply, but actual pressure at the joint also depends on how much of that force is spread across the clamping pad’s contact area — a wider pad spreads the same clamp force over more surface, resulting in lower PSI at the joint than a narrow pad would produce at the same rated clamping force. This is part of why panel glue-ups specifically call for parallel clamps with wide pads rather than narrow-jaw trigger clamps.
