Why “it looks square” isn’t good enough

A corner clamp that’s off by even a degree or two won’t look wrong when you glue it up — it’ll look wrong three joints later, when the frame doesn’t sit flat or the last miter has a visible gap. The only way to know a clamp actually holds 90 degrees under pressure is to check it with a square after clamping, not just trust the marked angle on the clamp body.

What the spec sheets tell us

The Irwin has a larger stated max opening (3" vs Bessey’s 2" capacity) and a manufacturer-quoted clamping force (200 lb) that Bessey doesn’t publish for this model. Bessey’s die-cast body is a stiffer construction on paper than Irwin’s composite-metal body, which in theory means less flex under pressure — but neither of us has clamped a frame with both and measured actual deviation from 90°, so we can’t confirm that from spec sheets alone.

Multi-pack vs single unit

Neither manufacturer’s listing we checked confirms unit-to-unit consistency across a multi-pack — that’s something you’d only catch by measuring several units from the same batch, which we haven’t done. If you’re doing a full frame (4 corners), a multi-pack saves you from re-clamping one corner at a time, but treat that as a convenience tradeoff, not a verified consistency claim.

Bottom line

We don’t have hands-on squareness data to make a “which one is more accurate” call yet. Based on spec sheets alone: Irwin 226200 is explicitly marketed for picture frames and has a wider stated opening; Bessey WS-3+2K has the stiffer die-cast construction on paper.
